Description

This is a wonderful and rare Victorian silver medal. It is known as the Long and Faithful Service Medal and was introduced by Queen Victoria in 1872 to honour members of the royal household who had worked there for at least 25 years. This medal was awarded in 1875 to a Christian Doll celebrating 41 years service to Queen Victoria and her predessesor King William IV. The medal has a portrait of the Queen to one side and an inscription to the reverse with the recipients name and a dedication. The medal edge is also engraved with the words 'Awarded by Queen Victoria 1875. It comes with its original suspension, tartan fabric ribbon and in its original silk and velvet lined presentation box with gilt stamp for Wyon, Regent Street London the medal maker.
Christian Doll was born in Germany in about 1813, a naturalized British subject. In the 1881 census he is still working for the royal family, and living at Windsor Castle. He died in London in 1903 and is buried in West Brompton cemetery. This rare medal is made from silver, but it does not appear to be hallmarked. Stock Code: 3553.
