Description

General Issue 1845 Pattern British Officers Sword. Very unusual and rare as the maker is Phelps of Calcutta, India. There were several British sword makers with branches in India, but Phelps swords are rarely found. The blade is 32 1/2 inches long indicating this sword was for the infantry or engineers, as the cavalry blade was 2 inches longer. The blade marked with a brass proving mark and heavily inscribed with the crown, Queen Victoria’s cypher an the crossed sword and baton. The handle in brass with again with the sword and baton, with the grip in shagreen and gilt wire. Possibly used the Indian Mutiny of 1857. A fine piece of history.
