Description

A vintage forged British £20 banknote that was produced by the Nazis in WW2. It was called Operation Bernhard, and was named after Major Bernhard Kruger an SS Officer in the Sachenhausen Concentration Camp in Germany. This is a £20 note and dated 20th August 1934, serial number 48M 65261. The chief cashier at the time was Peppiatt. They also forged £5, £10 and £50 banknotes as well. The idea was to print the banknotes in order to help finance the war in Germany. They produced the notes using Jewish prisoners from 1942 to 1945. It has been estimated that between £132 Million and £300 Million were made. Although they were deemed to be very accurate forgeries, the plot was foiled. In early 1945 the Germans stopped making the forgeries, and ordered the banknotes to be destroyed. Many were not, and they were boxed up and dumped in a lake in the Austrian Alps. Recovery of the notes began in the late 1950's.
Despite this being an excellent forgery, there are subtle differences between the genuine £20 note and this forgery, mainly based around the image of Britannia's Head, and the shape of the dots around the denomination.
Quite a lot has been written about this WW2 Operation, including books, TV series and films.
Its your chance to own one of these iconic British white banknote forgeries.
