Description
These vases were undoubtedly made for exhibition, probably the Paris Exhibition of 1878. We took them to the Antiques Roadshow a few years ago, and they were blown away by the quality, and clearly stated they were made for exhibition.
They show two well proportioned semi-naked ladies, one holding a jug and the other her jewellery. The background in ivory and dark red with exquisite gilt decorated panel borders. The rear of the vases are handpainted with pink briar roses and green foliage. The lids in rich gold, ivory and dark red decoration with a gold knob.
The base with green crossed hammers, dating them to between 1875 and 1887. Also a faint impressed F & M Mark.
